Quite a long time since last post. Been extremely busy and been away just as well, and have six gigs to shoot this week. Anyway, it is high time to catch up with some photos for the blog.
Recent weather conditions i.e. rains and fogs encouraged me to play with it and take them into my advantage. Not always successfully or to my intentions but still interesting.
Few days ago I headed to Mörbisch by Neusiedlersee to shoot some guitars equipment, pictures needed for one of my new projects.

I was after some great wooden texture and rising sun, that should have come up at specific moment and place (right side of the frame above). And probably it did, but thick layer of clouds and fog successfully covered it. I was after great morning colours, brought my strobes and softbox to play with and to illuminate guitars and great old Marshal amplifier... but let's rewind a little bit.
I called Richard, my friend, asking him the other day if we could get the gear out to the lake for sunrise shooting... Initial idea has been taken as great one. But then when things moved into realization phase, and we spoke again... I heard - "Do you really want to do it?" Well, yes. I replied. The best part starts now, we agreed on 5 a.m. 70km ride to Neusiedler lake. My wife was with me in the car when I had spoken day before to Richard, and she was so sorry for him when she heard him talking over then phone. I think it was that moment when he had realized he had to really drag himself out of bed at this time!
Photography is heavy stuff and requires commitment!
At least Richard had a chance to play few tunes in this decent environment...
So we arrived to Mörbisch around 6 a.m., it was still dark, very dark. I wanted to have one hour time buffer before sunrise to be able to setup equipment, Marshal amplifier, guitars and lights hoping for great shot(s). Weather forecast was... fog. I thought, fog - great - it might add even better effect. I was only hoping fog would not be too thick and rising sun would still get through its mist. Those appeared to be only hopes. Clouds were too heavy. From deep darkness we swiftly moved into grey, wet morning. I am not even mentioning effort of dragging Marshall speaker and amp and guitars on the pier...

I had pre-visualised shots and frames and had all of them set in my mind, and all was gone within few minutes. Major problem actually was not the weather but moisture, all was wet around us within moments, and keeping music gear and especially guitars was not the safest solution in the long run. We had to do it fast, thus no time to play with setup and lights and not too many long exposures, which I love. I wanted rising sun and some clouds blurred with 2-3 minutes exposure time which would give me sense of music frozen in time with world around. Well, it did not happen this time. Next time. I already have few new ideas in mind and will follow up and will blog it.
For the time being I am happy with only one shot, and this is the one at the top of this post. Here is another vertical version. I might use either of them later on. We will have to choose one or another. Photography wise settings were the same, only different orientation.
In both cases I used polarizer and reds enhancer filters to punch out wet wood and guitars' colours out of grey environment. Polarizer and enhancer take about 3 stops of light and resulting 30 seconds exposure also helped to blur water beneath.
Again, different effect from anticipated but not so bad in the end.
To be continued...
Cheers
Jerzy
